Vanja Contemporary hosts Showcase #1 in London's arty East End

A busy opening night, an even busier second private view and four happy artists and a gallerist -- overall, a success all around!

The first week of October saw the opening of our first exhibition in London, the Vanja Contemporary Showcase #1. We were glad that we could share this launch with so many art connoisseurs, the press and the general public. It was an important and very reassuring step forward towards our next endeavours. Or should we just say: what a blast!

Opening night of Vanja Contemporary Showcase 1 at Vyner Street Gallery.
Opening night of Vanja Contemporary Showcase #1, London. 01 Oct 2013.

Showing a selection of works by Edurne Aginaga, Philipp Haffner, Stefan Mildenberger and John Pakapoukas, this showcase gave the public a first chance to see the quality of our works in a gallery space. The showcase took place in the London's buzzy East End at Vyner Street Gallery. In addition, the audience had the chance to meet the artists who were all present at the opening night.

One highlight proved to be Philipp Haffner's brand new series of drawings, titled 'Airports', whose multi-layered and multi-dimensional perspectives on a large scale captivated the audiences immediate attention.

Also on show for the first time in the UK were works from two of Stefan Mildenberger's ephemeral series: 'What if the Television is on' and 'Scantrified Television'. The subtle colour lines in his haunting but  elegant high resolution photo prints of analogue TV scans were keen discussion points.

When entering the exhibition, the first images the audience encountered were the surreal works of Edurne Aginaga's photographic series 'Lie Down'. Her highly conceptual and symbolically charged works show temporary installations of objects on public house walls, photographed in an unusual perspective and without digital manipulation. 'Lie Down' won the 3rd place in the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards in the conceptual photography category and has been exhibited earlier this year at Somerset House in London.

Three works from John Pakapoukas' series 'Human Shadows', winners of the ArtSlant Showcase, were also on display. These digitally enhanced artworks based on photographic images dig under the superficial and glossy surface to expose deeper drivers of human existence.

Future exhibitions are planned in other places in Europe. Just follow us on Facebook or sign up to our newsletter to get latest news.

Welcoming our new artist: Stefan Mildenberger

We are absolutely delighted to welcome artist Stefan Mildenberger who joined us this week at Vanja Contemporary.

Stefan who lives and works in Hamburg/Germany, is a promising new artist whose work is already part of private collections and exhibitions. His work is currently on show in Switzerland at the Bromer Art Collection and in Germany at Kunsthaus Jesteburg

Stefan Mildenberger: 'What if the Television is on'

His work can predominantly be seen as a comment on the constant media flow our generation is subjected to. In the series 'What If the Television Is On' he is scanning audio-visual information of TV programmes directly from screen and transforms them into abstract prints. At Vanja Contemporary we are offering a special limited print edition of this series.

In another body of work titled 'Fences' he is merging landmark buildings and presents them in disturbing but also elegant montages. By doing this he achieves to blur and almost negate their representational functions and auras.

We would like to encourage you to have a look and discover the diversity of Stefan Mildenberger's portfolio!

Meet the Artist event

Edurne shows some new works of her portfolio outside the exhibition

With a group of art interested people Vanja Contemporary launched its first event 'Meet the Artist' at Somerset House, London on Sat 04 May 2013. With Edurne Aginaga, one of our artists' participation in the 2013 World Photography Awards Exhibition we thought this to be a perfect occasion to mark the start of our exhibition and events series after our website launch two weeks ago.

Edurne's series 'Lie Down' had been selected as 3rd place winner in the Conceptual Photography category of the awards. Her work was selected from more than 65,000 entries which indeed is a remarkable achievement.

We were glad to have the chance to offer our friends an exhibition tour together with the artist. Edurne gave an introduction to her work and explained how she developed the series. The audience was surprised to hear that all objects in her photographs have been physically placed on walls of public buildings and that there were no Photoshop or similar graphic programmes involved to alter any effects.

After the exhibition some people stayed on and Edurne showed interested people works of her portfolio before we then entered the more social part of the afternoon in a traditional British pub around the corner.

The exhibition is still on for another week until the 12 May. Go have a look it is definitely worth a visit!

Friday, 26 April 2013

Edurne Aginaga's photographic series LIE DOWN will be on show at Somerset House London, 26/04-12/05, as she has been nominated as a Top 3 Finalist at the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards. Congratulations Edurne!

Meet the artist: We invite you to join us and meet the artist at the exhibition on Saturday 04 May, 3pm. We meet at the entrance of the exhibition. Please check on the Somerset House website for directions and tickets.

A LIMITED EDITION of the series is available at Vanja Contemporary's ONLINE SHOP. First come, first served!
