LIE DOWN - New Works

Brighton Photo Fringe, Taylor St, Brighton

We are pleased to announce Vanja Contemporary's participation at the Brighton Photo Fringe 2014 with a selection of new works by Edurne Aginaga.

Edurne Aginaga's new works, part of her acclaimed LIE DOWN series, show surreal installations of carefully arranged objects on walls of public buildings. By defying gravity and other challenges she shot the pictures in a way that make viewers feel like standing upright on a vertical surface.

Aginaga was a Finalist of the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards (Category: Conceptual Photography).

The Brighton Photo Fringe (BPF) was founded in 2003 to compliment Brighton Photo Biennial. Every two years BPF designs and delivers a city-wide festival of exhibitions and events that attracts local, national and international participants and audiences.

Since its inception, the BPF has grown into one of the largest festivals of its kind in the UK, attracting over 100,000 visitors in 2012. The BPF is funded by Arts Council England, Brighton & Hove City Council and the National Lottery.

Vanja Contemporary @ Swab Barcelona 2014
We are pleased to announce that Vanja Contemporary has been selected to participate at Swab Barcelona – International Contemporary Art Fair in October 2014.

As part of their highly competitive MYFAF programme, we have been offered one of four spaces reserved for young galleries that have never participated in an art fair before. This will enable us to show our artists to a new and wider audience within one of Spain's most important art fairs.

For the main display at our booth we proposed to show works by Philipp Haffner. The quality of his large-scale drawings and video works convinced the jury, consisting of a team of curators, to offer us one of their four sought-after places at this year's event.

We look forward to welcome you at our booth in Barcelona from 02-05 October 2014!

FIFA World Cup Art by artist Stefan Mildenberger: MASSE #12 (World Cup 2014)

For the FIFA World Cup 2014, our artist Stefan Mildenberger has created MASS #12 (World Cup 2014).

This audio-visual work of art, that is more understood as a sculpture then to be a video, is made of the national anthems and national flags of the countries participating in the World Cup 2014 in Brazil and responds to Mildenberger’s previous works that deal with media overload.

The individual national anthems of each country (Brazil, Japan, Australia, Iran, South Korea, Italy, Netherlands, Argentina, USA, Costa Rica, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Colombia, Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, England, Spain, Honduras, Chile, Ecuador, Greece, Portugal, France, Croatia, Uruguay, Mexico, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Ghana, Algeria) are heard at the same time and play continuously in a loop. All 32 country flags have been fused in the same proportion to each other by a complex mathematical algorithm, which results in a digital (moving) image with subtle changes over time.

Stefan Mildenberger: What If Your Smartphone Is On

SAVE THE DATE:
Exhibition opening: 17 April 2014, 19:00, Berlin

18 – 26 April 2014, tête, Berlin

We at Vanja Contemporary are pleased to announce our first exhibition in Germany with a solo show by artist Stefan Mildenberger.
Mildenberger’s work, which has been widely exhibited across Europe, reflects a media-critical approach and can often be seen as a comment on the ceaseless flow of data and images through mass media and the internet. Through appropriating and modifying visual data using tactics such as delays in capturing them, he seeks to explore the nature of these digitally constructed and transmitted images and reveals hidden levels of aesthetic qualities behind the images’ glossy and transient surfaces.

This solo show in Berlin will present a new series of works, where he transforms moving images from his smartphone screen through an experimental scanning process into abstract digital photo prints. During the opening and closing nights, he will also stage live performances.

Opening night with performance: Thursday, 17 April, 19:00
Finissage with performance: Saturday, 26 April, 19:00
